The Primary KPI of the Collective Wellbeing of a Neighbourhood

Dog sculpture — Bochum, Germany, (c) Mohammad Tauheed

After arriving at a new area for the first time or coming back after long time, the quickest and most effective way to check the pulse of the neighbourhood is to observe the street dogs and cats of the area. If you see that the street dogs (astray or pet dogs out to walk) are happy, healthy, active and friendly, then you can assume that the people of that neighbourhood are probably good people, and they are a happy bunch.

On the other hand if you notice that the dogs look weak, unhappy, dirty, they are running away when you try to pet them, they are scared of you or barking at you unreasonably, then you can be sure something is wrong in the neighbourhood; the people in that area may not be good, they are not at a happy state.

All the different places I have been to in the world, the healthiest and happiest dogs I have ever seen in the streets is Bhutan. Specially the dogs in the town of Paro, and on the mountains of Taksang monastery. Similar scene I have observed in the streets of Istanbul, lots of happy, healthy, friendly cats and dogs. I believe it is a primary KPI and a key indicator of the collective happiness and wellbeing of the people of a neighbourhood.
